For many Americans, February 14th has come to mean heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, bouquets of pretty flowers and last minute trips to Walgreens.
But for those of us who have not a significant other, Valentine's Day is yet another slap in the face reminder that the only person who will be wishing us a Happy Valentine's Day and sending us boxes of chocolates is our grandmother (Yes, my grandma sent me a card and a box of chocolates).
Listen, I'm not bitter that yet ANOTHER Valentine's Day has come and almost gone and instead of sharing it with someone special I'm sitting on the couch watching the Daytona 500 with my dad and writing a blog about it. But it would be nice to not have a national holiday in order to remind me of my singleness. You're probably thinking, "Oh, well, if she had a boyfriend she would feel differently."
Even when I had a boyfriend on V Day, I thought it was lame. It just makes it seem like you're obligated to be nice and sweet to your significant other when, really, shouldn't that be the case on a daily basis when you're in a relationship with someone?
But, whatever. I'm done whining. Instead, I think I'll make the best of my evening by watching Masterpiece Theatre on PBS and see which Jane Austin story is on this week. Which happens to be "Northanger Abbey." I like it.
And to all those couples out there, Happy Valentine's Day! Seriously. I mean it.
